Thai Noodle House @ Coronation Arcade
Indian, Japanese and Thai food remains high on the food-we-like-to-eat-list although not necessary in that order. A fine execution of Thai cuisine dwells on the balancing of sweet, salty, sour and of course, spicy.
Thai Noodle House is the place to go for no-frills home-style Thai cuisine when Ryan and Valerie do not want to stray too far from our neighbourhood. It cost us $0.69 each in bus fare and a 5 minutes non-scenic ride.

Olive Rice S$14 (medium).
Barely enough for 5 persons but Madam Achara said we could always order plain rice later.
Ryan and Valerie dine at Thai Noodle House frequently but this was the first for the rest of us. Operated by mild mannered Madam Achara Siripong and her husband, one simply cannot doubt the food’s authenticity. The question is whether one liked their cooking and the test is in the tasting…
The Olive Rice arrived quickly. Hot off the stove, it tasted superb. Although black olives tend to taste sour or bitter, the rice remained untouched by those. Even Vanessa who is not a fan of Thai olive rice relented and took a small share after a token tasting. The portion was small for a medium-sized pot. We wanted a large but kind Mdm Achara thought it was enough for the moment. She doesn’t know us. Anyway, we all liked this dish.
The Fried Beef Kway Teow was glistening and I was afraid it might be too oily judging from the look. However, there was no greasy mouthfeel when eaten. I do not know if “wok hei” applies to Thai cuisine but this dish was very well executed. The rice noodles (kway teow) had spring, the beef was tender, the kailan remained crunchy and the egg was fragrant. I am actually quite amused the scrambled egg had my attention so overall, this dish is quite outstanding. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is contented with a one-dish meal.
The purple brinjal contrasted delightfully against the bright green and yellow hue of the Thai Green Curry Chicken. I like the texture of these eggplants, they were cooked through without being mushy. I don’t detest but given a choice, I prefer these purple local variety to the crunchy small Thai green ones which we normally get elsewhere. The curry was rich tasting and the chicken was succulently moist.
The “Pad Gra Prao” or minced pork with Thai/Holy basil looked good but did not match up. I felt they tasted more like tau yew bah (minced pork with dark soy) rather than the typical Thai street food classic. It lacked the spicy oomph which we have become accustomed to.
Baby Kailan or Thai Kailan as we locals called these did well on the texture and gravy seasoning but the fried garlic garnishing was bitter.
The Seafood Tomyum was a letdown. I was thoroughly disappointed with the taste of the soup. To put it very bluntly, there was not enough sour and heat (spice) in the broth. Worse of all, the after-taste was like a baby’s regurgitation of milk. The bad taste was not due to rancid coconut milk but it just tasted awful. Other than the broth, the seafood were very fresh; the prawns and squid were juicy and had lovely crunch. Valerie said that this was an “off” day for the cook. Since Valerie and Ryan comes here often, I have to take their word for it.
We ordered some white rice as we had only 2 tablespoons of Olive Rice each earlier but food was running out so we ordered two more dishes, the BBQ Pork and Deep-fried Chicken Wings. We had wanted Massaman Beef but it was not available. I felt the BBQ Pork could do with more charring and crisp around the edges and the dipping sauce was ordinary. The Chicken Wings were very crispy with very slight gamey taste (frozen wings?) and best eaten with the Thai sweet chilli sauce that accompanied them.
Based on this first time experience, the Olive Rice and Beef Kway Teow are items I would go back for, besides the friendly service. Perhaps, I should try their one dish meals on my next visit – I saw a lot of diners having Beef Kway Teow Soup.
