A Good Cuppa @ Strangers’ Reunion

Bing ordered a cup of coffee for Karen at The Elements, “If you like coffee, you may appreciate a cuppa here from Toby’s Estate Coffee.”

A coffee shop name was thrown in and Karen asked, “Are the baristas here trained by Ryan?”

The ladies were speaking my language – Coffee! I made a mental note. Ryan… Strangers Reunion…

I searched for the connection between Ryan and Strangers’ Reunion and found out that this cafe was opened by Ryan Kieran Tan, Singapore National Barista Champion in 2011 & 2012.

As if by telepathy, Jimmy sent me a newspaper clipping image via WhatsApp. We fixed an appointment with Ian to lunch there the following week, on the 28th.

The Crepe was a little dense, had a good bite to it and not fluffy as indicated but the texture complemented the Salami really well. The Beetroot Relish was brightly hued, on the sweet side and Jimmy thought they could have added some strawberries in it. I think that’s unlikely. The Mixed Greens had a tad too much balsamic in the vinaigrette that day. Overall, I enjoyed it.

There was a miscommunication during orders. The waiter assumed we were still deciding if we had wanted Florentine so the order wasn’t placed until we asked for it. The waitress came over to inform us and added that she’d told the chef to fire it away. We didn’t have to wait long but a lesson learnt for F&B industry is to always repeat customers’ orders.

I usually associate Florentine with spinach, wilted spinach to be exact, but that’s me. Florentine here came with generous layers of Smoked Salmon, fresh baby Spinach leaves and Poached Eggs done perfectly. The toasts were actually hard but they were crisp and their dryness easily compensated by the dribbling yolks. The Hollandaise Sauce had good balance, not too rich. Another good dish but I preferred the Savoury Crepes out of the two.

Coffee time! The crux of our visit. Jimmy had cappuccino and Ian had the Espresso. Jimmy liked that they got the milk/coffee ratio right. My aromatic Cafe Latte was robust, smooth mouthfeel, slightly nutty and medium bodied. A good cuppa, indeed!

Ooh, these pictures look mouthwatering! Right up my alley, I love breakfast. I think fresh eggs are my favorite food in the world! Lovely looking coffee too. I wonder how they make those pretty designs. Here, the coffee just comes as poured, but it tastes heavenly!

    • Sam Han says:

Hi Laura, the designs are made when pouring milk into the cup and drizzled to “sculpt” the shape. There’s also 3D milk foam these days and it’s usually cats so I don’t drink coffee with those art.

Why does all day breakfast end at 5pm? 🙂
I like Toby’s Estate Coffee but it is a bit too ubiquitous now. These days I prefer organic smaller estates for variety.

    • Sam Han says:

Good point! All day breakfast should last all day 😉 I’m not into any estates (like wine), if it’s robust and smooth, i’ll drink, lol… and I don’t even know where Strangers’ coffee come from.

Looks wonderful. A great review, Sam! If I were close enough, I would go there. And I’d have the server repeat my order. 😉

Great review, thanks for sharing. Makes me want to visit the place too. There is this map called CafeSG that lets you find all the local cafes in Singapore! Super useful for cafe hopping and to discover new cafes near home and workplace.

Hope to see more reviews from you
